the "Steeplechase Funny Face" a.k.a. "Tillie"

It represents the face of George C. Tilyou (1862-1914), owner of the Steeplechase Park amusement park in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY, which operated from 1897 to 1964. It was the first of the three great iconic parks original built on Coney Island, the other two were "Luna Park" (1903) and "Dreamland" (1904).

Today in Coney Island there are four gates with the face of "Tillie"

Gate 1                                                             Gate 2

Gate 3                                                             Gate 4

Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York 11224

The iconic Coney Island Boardwalk concession Paul's Daughter, formerly known as Gregory & Paul's,

GREGORY & PAUL  1962 and 1970

and in the same family hands since 1962, was forced to close last fall when the boardwalk's new landlord, the Italy-based Zamperla USA, rejected their business plans. You can read the heartbreaking story here.

Here's the building today, scrubbed free of all its once-wonderful character, save the familiar figures on the roof holding aloft a burger and a brew. (You can see the business in its glory days in the picture far below.)

Now that the Paul's Daughter signage is gone, though, you can see that the building has a mercantile history that went beyond 1962. Among the words in the remaining, overlapping painted signage are "Ball" (maybe "Ballroom"), Prizes," "Variety," "Discount" and "Gallery," as well as some other words I can't make out. Layers of history.

SOURCE

Paul’s Daughter is one of the oldest spots on the boardwalk. Currently operated by the
original owner’s daughter, Tina, they serve up clams on the half shell, lobster rolls,
hot dogs, and cold beer. Though recently renovated, it still has the classic
signage with signature lettering.

Paul’s Daughter owner is Tina Georgoulakos (with his father Paul aka “The Chief”, co-founded
the restaurant formerly known as Gregory & Paul’s in 1962) and still supervises its clam bar.

(version with couple in love)                 this scene was filmed on North Pier of Blackpool, U.K.
The film is based on the book
"Imagine: Growing Up with My Brother John Lennon"
written by Julia Baird, Lennon's half-sister

this painting may have been inspired  by the film "Nowhere Boy",  in fact, the scene of John and

is dressed in red just like the woman in the Dylan's painting

Drugstore                                                “ENDora OF THE LINE drugs”
Based on a Frame from the 1993 Lasse
Hallström film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"

This long shot of a sign of a local farmacy,
"End of the Line" embodies the essence of Endora.
The combination of an eye-level angle and the sign
being in the center all suggest how the words on
the sign are the dominant, and the attention is
immediately focused on the words.
End of the Line suggests how closely-knitted
and confined the habitants of Endora are
that they never really go anywhere outside
of Endora. Once you are situated in Endora,
you kind of never go away because their
boundaries are so enclosed within Endora.
Based on a Frame from the 1993 Lasse Hallström
film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".
"In the second scene of the film we are
shown a shot of the Endora drugstore.
The sign reads “ENDora OF THE LINE drugs”.
The drugstore has murky walls and there are
no cars parked outside of it. This vivid
picture suggests to the audience that the
town of Endora is isolated, and that once
you have been there, there is nowhere more
isolated you could go. The colours of the
drugstore and its surroundings symbolize
the emptiness, loneliness, and isolation of the town."
“Endora…Endora is where we are. Describing
Endora is like dancing to no music.
It’s a town where nothing much ever
happens…and nothing much ever will.”
Endora, Iowa, is fictional but is based
by Peter Hedges, the author of the novel,
on the town of Hedrick, Iowa.
The filming was done in a small town in Texas.
